Day 87 – Fort Kochi

Sleep in right through breakfast and lunch – we needed that sleep!

Up and out, small walk then a 40p tuktuk to get to French Toast for some mid afternoon brunch and coffee – amazing French toast (classic for Daisy, Bannoffe for Dave)

Cheeky pop over the road to The Happy Store where Daisy spotted a dress, all very lovely inside, dismantle the mannequin and everything and we end up getting a different one anyway

Try to pay with Chase, Monzo, Apple Pay etc without luck as it seems the card machines here are only accepting Domestic cards! Same issue was had at French toast so be wary when they say they accept card! Luckily it was cheap and we had a bit of cash and they even through in an extra discount on top!

Happy chappys, we head to Fort Cochin via Uber over a couple of island bridges to get there!

On the drive we pass by many massive naval bases – even more than Goa

First stop St Francis church – the first European chruch in India, founded by the Portuguese, modified by the Dutch and then the English

Weirdly it looks like a church but we spot no references to Jesus at all! Anglican Church

Also house the tomb of Vasco Da Gama who founded the portuegse presence in India?

We are convinced by a Tuktuk tour of the rest of fort cochi

Pass the Dutch cemetery to st Francis basilica – a proper Catholic Church with Jesus this time! next to at Mary’s convent

To the Dhobi Khana – A community setup by the Dutch in 1720 to wash the Dutch army’s clothes – now 10 acres of the original 13 are public play ground

Sample some lemon and curry leaf

To the heritage museum of India – a shop showcasing all the different works from around India! Was great to see all the bits from everywhere we’ve been in 1 place – stonework from Agra, pashminas from Kashmir, jewellery and carpets from jaipur – even met a shopkeeper who lived just over the road from where we were in dal lake Kashmir

To the spice markets to see many different spices, oils, teas, perfumes, etc – very nice connecting these up to the plants we saw at the spice plantation – even sample some sweet & spicy cinnamon that we saw yesterday

We pass by a large Hindu temple (entry for Hindus only) and see an elephant getting a bath

He seemed like a happy elephant, but Dave questions if he is happy with that chain on his ankle

As we drive away we are both shocked by a very large explosion coming from the temple right next to us! Our drive left said it was just the Cadana? and nothing to worry about

Make it to Ghandi Beach to walk along the sea front lined with some people selling bits and bobs and see the chinese fishing nets

Dave grabs a pistachio Kulfi (traditional Indian ice cream) from one of the vendors to eat as we stroll

See the fishing nets and the markets out front selling the catches of the day

Hunt for food – end up at the Old Fort hotel for some tasty treats – chicken lerala curry and Prawn coconut cashew curry, lovely setting and even some live music

Passion fruit lemonade and ginger lemonade to go with dinner

Missed the last ferry across to mainland so we grab a TukTuk (using Uber!) to drive us back across the bridges between the islands home to our hotel
