Day 254 – My oh Chiang Mai

We enjoy a bit of a lie in and get up just in time for breakfast just before 10; a basic setup with an omelette and some toast and instant coffee but it does us

Back to room, we have some admin to do before getting ready and head out to explore and grab lunch

Our first stop is the Wat Chiang Man: a temple complex that houses Buddha statues that are over 1,800 years old!

After a wander around the structures, we head out and down the road past Wat Lam Chang to the Three Kings Monument (aka the three wise men)

The three kings, who are depicted, are considered the founders of the city: King Mengrai, King Ramkhamhaeng, and King Ngam Muang

The monument is surrounded by a square but it’s too hot to hang about in sun, so we head around the corner and checkout a cheeky little temple just in the road: Wat Inthakhin Sadue Muang (see the featured image)

Finally, we get to Writer’s Club & Wine Bar for a spot of lunch – Pad Kropo (chili chicken and basil), some chicken satay sticks and a couple of juices ????

Filled, we pay up and move on to our next destination, which is right behind here: Wat Chedi Luang

It’s a quite big temple complex, with a £1 entry fee; in the centre is a massive temple from the 1400s, which was apparently damaged badly by a lightning strike in the 1970s

The City Pillar Shrine (San Lak Mueang) is hosted here, in the complex, but Daisy is not allowed in as it’s for men only (women are considered dirty as they menstruate so are not allowed into certain places – sounds about right ????)

We continue on down towards the city wall/moat, passing by a few ceremonies around temples and schools – a quick Google suggests we are here on a national holiday, called King Prajadhipok Day

Up along the moat we get to Tha Phae Gate, after stopping for a little raspberry gelato

It turns out the ancient city wall/gate is a secondary attraction here – the main thing we notice is hundreds of lovely, friendly Pigeons

Not long after going through the gate and spending a little time here, they’ve landed all over us and everyone else around!

After playing with our lovely Barries, we carry on up the moat to get to Ming Mueang Market – they have a couple stalls serving fresh food as well as all the ingredients and produce you might need to be able to go home and cook it yourself

It’s after a typical meal time so it’s not overly busy so we continue on back to the hotel where we do work for a couple hours

A bit later on, we head off out and find a local bus/taxi – it’s 30 baht per person to anywhere in the city; the driver misses the turning but invites Daisy into the front of cab with him to navigate

We get dropped at the Intercontinental Hotel to go up to it’s Hong’s Sky Bar: t’s all very fancy, why aren’t we staying here! ????

A margarita and a long island cocktail watching the sunset over the mountains

After enjoying the peace, we head off in search of dinner (and somewhere more our budget)

Annie’s is our destination after having a lot of banter with the staff and customers outside it last night, we have been convinced to come back

A few draught San Miguels, a Pad See Ew, a special Chiang Mai noodle curry and a Panang curry; we accidentally overrun, talking to people here, and don’t leave until almost 11!

Our next stop is the Kalare Thai Boxing Stadium – we meant to be there at 9 but with a couple fights left, we get bargain tickets to watch courtside

We have a couple cheap Chang beers each while watching some fights, one of which has an American participating

After it finishes, the night market is also packing up so we grab a tuktuk home – Daisy barters the fella down to half what he initially asked for ????
