Day 35 – Many views of Athens

Up at a slower pace – coffee with milk admiring our view, shower and head in for some late brunch

We go in-between Syntagma and Monastiraki to find Meat the Greek

Very, very yummy: chicken souvlaki wrap and pork gyros sandwich ???? (and cheap too!)

Filled up with good stuff, we go and find a nice new part of town

Around Hadrian’s Arch is a little touristy but very pleasant

Next to Arch is the Temple of Olympian Zeus, but we opted not to go in as the price was a little expensive for a limited gain

You can see just as well through the fence and most of it was covered by scaffolding

We meet some of the greenery of East Athens including the Athens National Gardens

Inside, it seems they have a high population of terrapins as there’s many monuments in the park for them: Boy Fisherman’s Statue and even Turtle Parthenon

Onwards, we go where Dave passed on his morning fiascos yesterday – the “Zoo”

A few cages, in the park, filled with ducks, geese, goats and cockatiels (as well as a cat?)

We were most fascinated by the wild, bright green parakeets that live around Athens who were making their nests!

Next, we go towards the NE of Athens and have a little stop at Cafe Cassata for a sorbet and a strawberry and chocolate moose cake

Then, we hit the stairs for the Lycabettus Hill Funicular… very steep!

The funicular itself was pretty steep too – €10 up and down pp – we took some steeps to reach the first viewpoint instead

After enjoying the view, and having a breather, we head down and back towards the centre – pop into Marks & Spencer to grab some discount bits to have dinner in tonight

We decide to brave the heat and continue on to the last bits of our to-do list to see

Past the Acropolis and it’s slopes, we find The Prison of Socrates

Not so much an actual prison though as they’re not sure what it’s origins were, just that it was used to hide precious antiques during WWII

Onwards and upwards towards the Philopappos Monument

Good timing for us, also, as sunset was close and it happened to be one of the best views in Athens!

When the sun hides behind Parnitha Mountain, we head down to find the final ingredients for our dinner and get to the metro to get back

Once back, straight to cooking and the kitchen we have isn’t so we’ll equipped, but we make do

Chicken jalfrazi with triple cooked chips and a coriander naan ????

Bedtime for us as an early start!
