Day 508 – Coastal cruising

We’re up and out today and pop to our usual breakfast spot on New Regent Street, Belle (cafe & micro roastery)

After some toasties and caffeine, we get to the Kilmore Street bus stop to take the 29 to the airport

From here, we get a ride in a courtesy shuttle to EZU Car Rental where we’re given a Toyota Vitz (a granny-mobile) and get on the road north

We have a brief snack from Macca’s, in Woodend, and then get to Gore Bay to get a view of Cathedral Cliffs / Gully (see the featured image)

The road takes us down to the bay and we learn that it’s named after John Gore who was an British-American sailor from the 18th century and was appointed to Cook’s expedition in 1768, sailing to Tahiti, Australia and New Zealand

He took over command of both Cook’s vessels, HMS Revolution and Discover, in the final stages of their voyages when Cook died in Hawaii

Continuing our drive along the coast, we have a brief stop to stretch our legs at Ōhau Point Lookout – there’s a rather prolific NZ seal colony

Another notable thing here are signs about ōhau rock daisies – rock on!

The total drive takes us about five hours but we get into Blenheim, quickly check into our Airbnb and wander into the town

After a little mosey, we settle on Marlborough Public House for a couple of fish’n’chips and some wine

Sadly, the food is pretty pants but we enjoy our time out of the car before calling it a night to get some rest for tomorrow
