Day 149 – Kingston Town

Terrible night’s sleep – our neighbours were the worst!

Check out and straight to Metro Bakery & Cafe for flat whites while we talk to family

Cave Garden / Thugi is just over the road

This is a landscaped garden with a huge sinkhole at the centre in the heart of Mount Gambier

Unfortunately, it does have trash in it too

We drive to the Blue Lake carpark where we get up to the Rook Wall and Lookout

It’s construction began just over 2 weeks after the conclusion of WWI and is formed of local basalt, limestone and dolomite

It gives a great view of the lake and the top has information about the volcanic origins of it’s formation

The lake is another example of Australia’s tendancy to name things incredibly literally and is now a reservoir – it’s replenished by infiltration of local rainfall and stormwater, together with lateral groundwater flow, through the limestone aquifer

Blue Lake is flat bottomed with an
average depth of 80 metres, which has dropped two metres over the last 25 years

At the top, we can stroll along to Hoo-Hoo Lookout which gives a view of Brown Lake and the Centenary Tower

The flag isn’t raised on the tower which means it’s not open today so no point of getting much closer

Down to the carpark, we get another view of Blue Lake from another viewpoint before popping in the car all the way around the lake and heading onwards to Millicent

Here, we stop at Millicent Swimming Lake – it’s a little chilly and has a few too many gulls knocking about so we go to Java Cafe for some lunch

Chicken, avocado, sweet chilli and capsicum toastie and a chicken yiros

Back on the road for a little until we reach Beachport, which is home to the Pool Of Siloam

It’s a little lake by the coast that has enough salt in it, it will make you float – we would go in for a dip but the birds own it and it’s rather mucky

Now to Kingston SE – this is where we’re staying tonight, at Crown Inn Hotel

We arrive and take some time to relax before popping down for some dinner in the pub downstairs

A feast of sharing a steak and chips as well as a large, jazzed up margarita pizza

After, we stroll to Kingston Jetty; we’ve caught it just in time for sunset

There are a bunch of Little Pied Comerants around the jetty too, some of these being antsy juveniles

We turn back as the sun goes down and call it a day
