Day 206 – Sleepless in Hanoi

After getting to bed at about 1am, you will be happy to hear that we manage to sleep through until 6am!

However, it seems people like rearranging furniture in this hotel early; we drift on and off waking up to the sounds of screaming people, bike horns and a very loud karaoke bar setting up about 9am… needless to say, it’s a slow day

We are finally moving out about 1pm and go to Aha Coffee for a caffeine boost

Then we set off  to Phở 10 Lý Quốc Sư – a pho restaurant that actually has a Michelin star – fancy pants Davesy today ????

You pick how you want your beef cooked, and get a decent bowl of noms – all for £2 each ????

It’s packed here so they fill up the tables and we are sat with a couple folks, one from London who makes the mistake of adding too much chilli sauce and suffers the price! Oh the Brits!

We made a mistake of ordering one of the Beef Brisket phos and it was 90% fat – but the rest of it is yummy and fresh

Fed, we walk on down to the Hoa Lo Prison Relic – the remains of the Hoa Lo prison, built by the French colonists to house and even execute political prisoners

It was then used by the Vietnamese themselves to house the American POWs during the war – it’s shown that they were treated much more humanely than the French treated their prisoners

We see various exhibitions and stories of many of the Vietnamese prisoners escapes through the sewers and other means

Afterwards, we grab a couple of juices and get in a Grab that takes us back to the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, which we failed to get to yesterday

A ticket is about £2 each and we get in to see the North Gate including a temple on top

Weirdly, to get to the other parts of the complex you have to go out onto the road and walk down through another entrance

Being right in the heart of the political and military area, it seems security is high and makes getting in anywhere fraught with trouble; it’s also where locals seem to play their badminton so we have to use the road!

In by the South Gate, we see the rest of the complex: unfortunately, the citadel was destroyed long ago but they’ve kept the gate houses and pavilions standing to show what it was once like

We even go down into the underground bunkers they have here – this is where the command coordinated the war with America hiding away from the b52 bombers

The underground bunker war room

Knackered, we grab a juice and see some bricks on the archeological section and head back to freshen up

Out for noms – we’ve got Indian on the brain and stumble on Pk Spice Indian Restaurant Hanoi

We order a chicken jalfrazi two tigers and a butter chicken that comes with a garlic naan – cheapest meal we’ve had coming to less than £10!

Time to venture for the evening; we find a long stretching night market and wander down picking up a new sleep mask for Daisy

We go up and down and then find Ha Tien Beer Street – it’s hella hectic

Servers are grabbing people into places and we’re taken too by one offering six free shots

The street has men with balloons and ladies with strollers offering fresh fruits

After our beer, we make it through the rabble and find the street is cut off but an ad-hoc gig right in the heart of a cross road – the lady has some lungs on her, beside her 5-piece band!

We grab a very cheap drink to catch the end of the music and then make our way home

Time to try to get some sleep in this very loud and bustling city ????
