Day 233 – Borobudur and beer

Wake up slow with some in-room coffee and nature channel

We then get ready and stroll along to Svarga Coffee and Eatery

Here, we each have some pancakes and a couple of cappuccinos with Javanese coffee beans ????

We have a couple more coffees and, while waiting for a Grab taxi to do our main activity today, we get talking to Riga, who is one of the owners here, about what to do in the local area

They also have two lovely Cats here, called Chaplin and Momo

Our Grab arrives and we’re whisked off to Borobudur, home of the world’s largest Buddhist temple

Note: we got a Grab taxi as it’s actually quicker and cheaper than booking with the local tours!

We arrive and sadly they don’t have any capacity for the ticket that allows you to go up the structure of the Borobudur Temple but we do get the tickets online from Traveloka, where they are a little cheaper

The temple itself is on a little hill and, with our tickets, you’re able to walk around it

Each side of the temple has its own theme of statues with specific-meaning hand gestures: East calls the Earth to witness, South gives blessings, West calls for silence or meditation and finally North presents space for speeches or lectures

It seems there’s a school trip on today as we each get interviewed by a group of boys and girls who are practicing English

We complete the circuit and head down to the exit where we go through a garden that appears to have decommissioned parts of the temple

To reach the carpark, we go through a maze of markets

Just before, we spot a place that will give us a snack to get us through the afternoon: fresh coconut water some chicken satay sticks and sticky rice

We get back to our initial Grab driver and do a deal to get back to the city; it’s a tad longer than the first drive as there’s so much traffic (must be because of the Indonesian bank holiday)

Into the city, we’re dropped at the top of the notable street Malioboro – it’s a mostly pedestrianised shopping street with horse-drawn carriages for tourists

We walk down it and then pop to get some cash before failing another Grab to take us to another side of town

Here, we’re driven to the other notable street, of Prawirotaman

We start in Till Drop Bar & Resto and grab a double beef burger, a Thai-style fried chicken burger and some homemade crisps, as well as some local beers

They even have some live music here

We then wander down the road, noticing a lot more international travellers/tourists, until we find Easy Groovy

Here, we order some beef tacos to share as well as two more local beers

Sadly, they have live music here but only around the weekend – they even have a whole band stage and set up

However, out of the blue, a large group of people come by – politely asking the restaurant/bar first – and start singing as a choir!

We have several more beers and then call it a night getting a Grab back and going to bed
