Day 499 – F-f-f-fire

Up to have breakfast and then ready ourselves and head to the ferry port

We are here near the departure time but predictably have to wait for the boat

While we wait, we see a bowl of sea snails and one trying to make a runner – he sadly gets taken away ????

About 30 minutes later, we’re boarded and the ride is rougher than the initial ride here but less sickening

Off the boat in Sihanoukville, we get a Grab to Burger King – FURI Mall for a small lunch to share

It’s another Grab to take us to Sihanoukville Railway Station where we board the train very smoothly and it’s basically on time

As we head out of Sihanoukville, it seems to have a lot of homes and buildings along the line – even on the line at times, with the horn having to warn off children, dogs and cattle!

The ride is pretty easy and we get views of the sea initially, as it’s very close to the railway line, and then the countryside where we see many water buffalos

There seem to be many forest or crop fires and it’s not clear to see if they are because of the heat or on purpose but the train actually drives through one (we didn’t have time for a photo)!

We arrive into Kampot at around 4 pm and walk to our accommodation, The Square Kampot Hotel

After a brief moment to shower, we get out and walk into the main town including through the night market

We make our way to the riverfront and see the lit up walking and small traffic (tuk tuks and motorcycles) Entanou Bridge

This is the third version of it as it was bombed heavily by the Khmer Rouge and then a big truck fell through it another time

Further north of here is the Seahorse statue, which was installed just last year

Many initially thought money could be better spent but it’s actually revitalised the area and encouraged locals to put up stalls and Cambodians from elsewhere to visitG

Getting hungry we spy The Pig Pen BBQ for some easy dinner

A basket of meat and a couple sides for $15

From here, we pop by Monkey Republic Kampot Cafe, Bar & Kitchen where we meet up with our German friend and book a tour for tomorrow

Tired, we call it a night and get a tuk tuk back to our hotel
